January … time for all the brave souls to get awarded during the approaching Republic Day celebrations. And the family of this 13-year-old student from Saupins School who saved his mother from the clutches of a thief is gearing up for the day.

The family couldn’t forget the incident of when Dishant’s mother thought it will be the end of their family. It was 4th April 2015, Sector20, Panchkula when Dishant Mehndiratta along with his mother and younger brother (8) was at home while his father, Ravinder Mehndiratta, was at his office in Baddi. The thief asked for Ravindra and on account of using the washroom entered the house.

Dishant, showing a presence of mind, had begged the thief to release his mother and at the same time was cautious enough to look for time to snatch the knife, assuring his younger brother’s safety at the same time.

As soon as he succeeded, his mother and he together raised an alarm which brought the neighbours attention to them.

Now, after nine months, the family is still unable to comprehend what had happened and what could have happened had it not been the spontaneous and brave Dishant.

Appreciating this 13-year-old’s  for his courage, the District Child Welfare Council had forwarded his name for the national honor.

The modest Dishant, upon receiving the award, couldn’t say much, however, his words are encouraging, as he says, "I feel encouraged with the appreciation I have received from the local administration. I would ask all the children to be brave, and not get bogged down by fear. Be brave, and God will help," he added.
