After a sparkling 2015, where he won 4 titles in Category B of Indian Golf Union (IGU) calendar, Chandigarh-based junior golfer Aadil Bedi is all set to represent the country at the Junior World Golf Championship to be played in San Diego, US, in July this year. His selection in the Indian team comes on the back of finishing as the top ranked golfer in Category B last season.
Studying in Vivek High School, Sector 38, Aadil's rise has been nothing short of meteoric. In 2011, he finished at number #1 in Category D of IGU, and then followed it up with another number #1 finish in Category C in 2013.
"It is a great opportunity for me to play in Junior World Golf Championship in San Diego. The IGU sent my nomination for the tournament since I topped the Category B merit list last season. The course will be challenging but I will try and draw confidence from my performance in 2015 where I had won 4 titles in the IGU calendar," Aadil said.
Aadil has already bagged 150 medals in national and international golf tournaments across the globe. However his fascination with golf started when he was all of 4 years when he saw his maternal uncles – Mohan Singh and HP Singh – play with a dimpled white ball along with his father Harry Bedi. Now a 15-year-old and standing at 6 foot, Aadil has come into his own in the past decade.
"The focus is very much on winning (the championship) and also gaining valuable experience. I need to know every aspect of the game, play on new courses and analyse and correct whatever feels out of place. I will say that golf is just 50% to 60% about the game an individual has and the rest of it depends on the mental aspects," Aadil pointed out, underlying his thought process which may be mistaken for a mature players’ with years of experience.
Jesse Grewal the director of CGA Golf Academy in Chandigarh also Aadil’s coach believes that Aadil's game has improved in the year gone by.
"Aadil performed remarkably well in the IGU circuit last year and that has helped in increasing his confidence. Now, his putting has improved considerably, his sub-par scores have been better, and his overall game has developed a lot. I am sure he will do well in the championship (Junior World Golf Championship)," Grewal said.
