Raj Bhawan's auditorium, Dehradun was filled with hardworking students and principals on Friday as Uttrakhand's Governor, K K Paul honoured 22 meritorious students and principals of three schools (which had hundred per cent results) with the Governor's Award.
Chief minister Harish Rawat was the chief guest on the occasion and thanked the Governor for having started the tradition of the Governor's Award to encourage students and teachers to perform better.
The students honoured included 19 toppers (in Arts stream, science stream and commerce stream) of class 12 board exam of Uttarakhand Board of School Education (UBSE) and three students who topped in class X i.e high school exam of the board. An award amount of Rs.5000, Rs, 3000 and Rs. 2000 (in bank drafts) was given by the Governor to those getting first, second and third positions in the intermediate exams (Science, arts and commerce) alongwith a certificate of Governor's Award. Besides this, the three schools which had cent percent results were given Rs.50,000, 30,000 and Rs.20,000 (according to merit) for the libraries of these schools.
After receiving the award, class Xth topper, Prashansa Pokhriyal from Haldwani who had scored 97 percent in high school said, "Coming to Dehradun to receive the governor's award for academic achievement is a big thing and I feel overwhelmed. I hope I can bag the same again in my class XII boards. It was very motivating to meet the toppers from across the state on the same platform"

The award was instituted by the Governor in 2015 and due to his initiative there is seen improvement in results of students in boards exams; the Governor has also announced to increase the amount of cash given as the award.
Governor, Paul after congratulating all the students who received the award, their teachers and parents, said in his address, "Besides hard work of the students, their success had been made possible by the inspiration and guidance given by their teachers."
In his address, Governor emphasized on inculcating reading habit in students as it increases knowledge, enhances focus, gives positivity and helps a person in his personal as well as social life, enriching his or her life and helps in character building; he also requested students on focusing on their capabilities as getting good marks isn't enough. He also stressed on the importance of teachers in the process of student development.
"Studying good books, biographies and autobiographies of great people helps in improving one's personality and develop one's character. Students should get associated with works of social welfare and utility like Swachh Bharat Mission and also make people aware about using water properly and wisely" said the governor.
Meanwhile, class XII state board topper from Nainital district, Priyanka Bhatt who secured 95 percent in Science stream said, "It was a great feeling to achieve the governor's award and surely has motivated the students to do even better. Governor stated that upgrading skills in this competitive era is very important and we will ensure that we continuously do that"
