Knowledge and wisdom are two things that go hand in hand. Without one, the other is rendered useless. And thus, it is important that with academic education, wisdom and worldly-awareness be taught as well.

And who better to do this task, than someone who is looked highly upon, someone who people trust and who is respected amongst the society as a person of wisdom. It is the duty of such powerful people to ignite the minds of the youth to broader ideas and to free them of the orthodox ways of the past.

Such a step has been taken by the Puducherry Lt Governor, Kiran Bedi who recently visited the Savurirayalu Naicker Government Girls High School ahead of the Vidyanjali Yojana programme to be launched on June 16, 2016, in an attempt to teach the young girls there, the powerful sense of optimism and the ability to look at the higher values of life. She stressed the need to start ‘shramdaan’ (volunteering of labour) in schools every weekend by cleaning classrooms and asked students along with teachers to bring their own dusters and brooms to clean the school.

She said that they have to develop the habit of reading and create a fixed deposit of knowledge bank. She shared her secret with the students: “You need to inculcate a habit for reading, playing, dancing and singing,” she told the students. She promised to bring books for the school children from Delhi.

As the young minds listened keenly, they were inspired to open their minds to newer possibilities and to break the predetermined walls of the society that bind us from achieving things that are meant to be achieved.

The Directorate of Education has recorded this programme and would send it to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The Vidyanjali Yojana provides an opportunity for a potential person from any field to visit the school and teach students.
