Sunday marked the declaration of the highly-anticipated JEE Advanced 2016 result. Out of the 155,948 candidates who had registered for the exam, 36,566 qualified as per the official JEE website. While some fell short of their expectations, others already gained a foothold towards a successful career.

One such success story is of a daily-wage labourer’s son Abhay Verma. The small-town boy from Gorakhpur cracked the examination with an outstanding All-India rank of 3372.

What’s more remarkable about Abhay’s triumph is that he belonged to an underprivileged family. And instead of giving up, he worked hard. “My father is the only bread-earner in our family. He earns less than Rs. 500 per day by fixing tiles in Punjab. I have one brother and two sisters and though all of us go to school, our father is hardly able to pay for the school fees and manage our living expenses,” he said.

Abhay was studying in Mr. Anand Kumar’s ‘Super30’ institute in Patna which, yet again created history this year as 28 out of 30 students cracked the prestigious exam. “I would have been happier if all 30 had qualified. But I know it cannot always be like that. The students showed some great hard-work and determination and I am sure they all will excel in their fields,” said Mr. Kumar.

Speaking about Abhay, he said, “It’s remarkable what he has achieved. He used to study day and night, especially Mathematics. Hailing from a low-income family, it was always a struggle for his father to even arrange for two square meals a day, but I’m glad that his hard-work paid off.”
