Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, ‘The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ which aims to make India a cleaner place by instilling responsibility for all local areas in individuals is a success in varying degrees across the nation. The PM would be really proud of Kannur district in Kerala, where all schools will be elevated to the status of ‘clean school’ under the Swachh Vidyalaya scheme by August 1.
The district administration efforts to make Kannur the first open defecation-free (ODF) district in South India by September 1 are already in high gear. In fact, the September 1 deadline will be an accomplishment given that it would make Kannur reach that benchmark a solid 2 months before the entire state of Kerala is planned to be declared ODF State.
The proposed ‘clean schools’ are being provided sanitation facilities as part of the ODF initiative, sources said.
The decision to elevate the proposed schools to the ‘clean schools’ status was taken at a meeting of education officials in the district attended by District Collector P. Bala Kiran. District Shuchitwa Mission co-ordinator V.K. Dileep was also present.
