The summer holidays have begun and kids have got their holiday home work and projects.
While kids school projects are surely educational (at least in theory), they become a parents’ responsibility (as perceived by them). Often these projects are complex and involve photos, research, and multiple trips to the craft store.
My son is in the 6th grade and has already done at least a dozen major projects in his school career. I mean he has done projects on plant life cycles, famous Mughals, flora and fauna, and a bunch of other stuff I can’t remember right now.
To speak from my personal experience I believe the parents’ feeling of perfection and control are more responsible for them doing their kids’ projects then the nature of these projects compelling them to do it.
I’ll tell you what I learned from school projects helping my kids, I learned dad (me) is very smart at research and science. But, is that what I want my kid to learn? Not really.
So who does more work on these projects? The parents or the children? I think the real education comes from building these projects with our children. So, for your child’s learning sake, keep your involvement on the project work minimal! Let them do it.
Obviously, that doesn’t mean you can’t help. Kids need guidance – that is part of their learning process, and they can’t independently use the internet, the computer, the printer and there may be cutting and pasting involved.
The trick is to know when to help the child and when to leave them to themselves.
What are you feelings about school projects? Do comment and let me know.
