The Indian education scenario at times seems bleak but then some incidents light up the horizon for a bit giving us a feeling that all is not lost and though slowly but steadily we are making inroads in illiteracy and inequity.

The Australian Consulate General in Chennai has proposed to grant a sum of Rs.15 lakh to single teacher schools to finance an education and women’s empowerment project in 50 remote villages in the State of Tamil Nadu. The funds will be managed by Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society and will be made available under the Consulate’s direct aid programme. It is postulated that the program will benefit around 1,500 children. The project aims to provide basic, quality education to children who are not currently attending schools, said Sean Kelly, Australian Consul-General for South India.

The distinguishing feature of this project is that the schools will provide skill training to local village women who will in turn run the schools. “At the same time, the project will empower rural women through meaningful employment and community participation,” Mr. Kelly said.
