By January 2020, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) collected approximately 22 Lakh against littering as penalties but instead of continuing with the rule, its Marshals have instead chosen to educate people on the benefits of waste management.

Waste Management has been included in school education syllabus for more than a decade now however, the question remains how many school systems actually pay attention to implementing this in their students' daily life. BBMP Marshals are doing something wonderful to bring notice to it.

Time and again, it has been proved that educating someone works better than punishing them to establish a point. With the same objective in mind, BBMP Marshals are going around government schools in Bengaluru to make children aware of waste management.

Marshals, in the group of 8-10, visit one school every week and teach children the process of waste segregation. They believe in hands-on training; as reported, they are getting positive responses from the children as well as their parents. A child told Times Of India “I want to keep my city clean, I have also told my father to bring two buckets to separate waste.”

Inspired by the idea, the Principals of government schools in the South zone of Bengaluru are also teaching the children about the ill-effects of plastic and the importance of ‘Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.’ The original idea behind interacting with them directly is also resulting in kids telling their parents what they learn in school and why it is important to segregate solid waste. The Marshals hope this shall bring about a positive change in waste management at the ground level more so than penalising might.
