Yesterday as the Prime Minister addressed a public meeting at Bhavra in Alirajpur district, the birthplace of freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad, children enjoyed a holiday as most of the district schools were shut in lieu of the massive crowds that will attend the rally, but not in Khandwa where all schools were open, thanks to a letter sent by a 13-year-old school boy to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The letter compelled the Khandwa administration to withdraw its decision to keep schools closed on Tuesday.

‘Why should my school remain closed if you are holding a rally?’ Devansh Jain, a Class VIII student of Vidhyakunj International School, wrote to Modi ahead of his August 9 visit.

Though Khandwa administration revised their initial order, district collectors of some districts of western Madhya Pradesh ordered the schools to be closed. “In view of heavy rainfall alert in Indore district by meteorological department and requirement of school buses for a programme, all Anganwadis, government and private schools shall remain closed,” says an order released by the Indore district collector.

On Monday afternoon, the Khandwa district administration withdrew its order and also sent mail to the school informing about the change in plan. “In accordance with the latest directive issued by the administration, we will keep the school open,” Vidhyakunj International School director Jai Nagda said.

Devansh’s later was crisp and to the point where he urged the PM to let his school function. It read “Modi uncle, you are so popular that people come to your rallies in their own vehicles. I have seen huge crowd whether you address a rally in India or abroad. In fact, I used to fight with friends when they used to tease me that people are ferried to your rallies. But now I feel that they were right. You always urged students to focus on education and career. So, please ask the chief minister to ensure that our school is not closed,” he wrote.

The Class VIII student said that he was unhappy by the fact that his school was going to remain closed due to Modi’s rally. Talking to his mother about it, she told him nothing could be done about it lest he wrote to the PM himself, he did and what a profound impact it has had.
