Celebrate birthdays of girl students in state: Haryana education department

Haryana education department has decided to celebrate birthdays of girl students every second Tuesday. Its yet another effort to promote Beti Bachao-Beti Padhaao programme, which the govt has named Kanya Janamdin Utsav.

In an endeavour to promote Beti Bachao-Beti Padhaao programme, the Haryana education department has decided to celebrate Kanya Janamdin Utsav each month to celebrate womanhood. Every second Tuesday birthdays of girl students falling under a particular month will be celebrated across all state-run elementary schools. The ‘utsav’ is expected to commence on 11 February.

As per PTI reports, the celebration will involve all the teachers conveying birthday wishes to the girl students with panchayat members in presence. Special meal will be distributed for lunch under mid-day meal programme, as directorate of state elementary education, said, “The panchayat may also arrange cooking of special food to the students on the day of celebration.”

However, the involvement of the teachers in the programme has been opposed by the teachers bodies in the state. Complaining of shortage of about 50,000 teachers in the state, Wazir Singh, president of Haryana Vidyalaya Adhyapak Sangh, has said, “The primary function of the teachers is to teach the students and if the government keeps asking them to hold back-to-back programmes, it may affect studies adversely.”
