Lalita Prasida Sripada Srisai, 13-year-old girl who made a place for herself at an international level by winning the prestigious ‘Community Impact Award’ at the Google Science Fair in California, is a pride for her parents, teachers and school, Delhi Public School Damanjodi, Odisha. For that matter, she has done the entire nation proud.

The young genius developed a bioabsorbent-based water purifier by making use of waste corn cobs. Her model of this purifier is both low-cost and eco-friendly. Participating and winning in 13-15 years age group, this student of DPS Damanjodi chose corn cob as the main ingredient for her product after much research. Researching for her product, she had well calculated that corn cob is high in mechanical strength, rigidity and porosity and so will make a suitable adsorbent.

There is also a report published on her project on the Google Science Fair website that says, “Hence, contaminants like oxides of salts, detergents, suspended particles, coloured dyes, oil and grease get adsorbed in the surface of the corn cobs. Some of the heavy metals are also adsorbed by corn cobs. If the drain pipe of the household is connected to a chamber having different layers of corn cobs in partition layers or to an S-trap pipe having corn cobs, it will separate about more than 70-80 % of contaminants including suspended particles from the waste water.”

Google Science Fair had awarded her with a prize money of US$ 10,000 and has also entrusted her with support for 1 year to build her project.
The entire school celebrated the news of her achievement and specially the principal, Trinath Prasad Padhi, who was all praises for his student.
