The Ministry of HRD has given directions to schools across the nation that expenditure incurred on books, uniforms and transport of children with special needs would be reimbursed, said Satyapal Singh, Minister of State for HRD.
Mr. Singh spoke at the Helen Keller Awards ceremony organised by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People and Mindtree. He added that about 12 million people exist with disability and just one per cent is able to attend schools.
"Specially challenged people just do not need courtesy and compassion, but real empowerment which would come through education. How to ensure it is a big challenge," he said at the ceremony.
He further said that Rs. 200 will be given to the girl child each month.
The government has also issued directions from this academic session of providing minimum 5 per cent admission in all educational bodies, Singh said.
"It is one of the topmost priority for this government to make sure that the rights of specially challenged people are ensured," he stressed.
He asked for the support and unity of not only supporters but also ambassadors fighting for the rights of the disabled people for the upliftment of people with special needs
