Lack of quality teachers has been pointed out has time and again by various reports by experts or voiced by many quarters of the education system and now the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry is contemplating to do something about it. To boost the quality of pedagogy, especially at the school level, the HRD ministry is exploring the possibility of setting up a university for imparting teachers' education.

Even as you read this, the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) is preparing a 'concept note' on the establishment of a Teachers' University on the directions of the HRD Ministry, senior officials shared.

Officials pointed out that such institutions have been present abroad for many years now, and it was felt that the time was ripe for a specialised university that dealt with aspects related to teachers' education and thus improve the overall teaching standards.

"A panel of experts in the NCERT is already working on the concept note which would examine the requirement of such a University and how it could be established," sources said.

The concept note would examine whether a completely new institute was needed or an existing one could be converted into the said university.

"For instance, there are regional institutes of the NCERT; it may be more feasible to convert one of them into a Teachers' University. These possibilities would be explored," they said.
