The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) – India’s largest institute for open and distance learning – on Sunday announced exemption of fees for its transgender students of all programmes. Either the certificate issued from the central or state government, or a medical officer will have to be submitted by the candidates or they could produce their Aadhaar cards to avail this fees exemption.

Vice Chancellor Ravindra Kumar announced this initiative during the 22nd Professor G Ram Reddy Lecture, a release issued by the varsity said.

This is not the first time IGNOU has taken a bold and progressive step for the transgender community.

The legal implementation of ‘third gender’ status for the community by the Supreme Court happened in 2014 whereas IGNOU had already been offering the option of ‘other’ gender category in their admission forms since 2012.
