India has been ranked eighth in the world in terms of respecting its teachers. Although, the country’s among the least paying nations when it comes to teachers’ salary. They’re paid “much less than the wage considered fair for the job.”
According to the Global Teacher Status Index (GTSI) 2018, India is ranked 26th out of 35 countries, much below the developing neighbour Malaysia and much smaller countries such as Portugal, Chile, Czech, Hungary, Columbia among others.
India also expects a pay cut if the teacher doesn’t do his or her “job” not well. The GTSI states that over 60 per cent of Indians think that teacher should ‘be paid according to the record of their pupil’.
According to the GTSI data, most countries have an opinion that teaching should be an outcome-based profession. However, the number of people who agree with the opinion has decreased over the year.
As ironic as it sounds, India ranks fourth on the list of parents encouraging their children to become a teacher; close to 80 per cent Indians encourage their children to become a teacher.
It has been revealed by the index that there is a direct link between teacher status and pupil performance as measured by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s PISA or Programme for International Student Assessment scores.
