Inspite of the raging political row over sedition, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has won the President's award for excellence in research and innovation.
President Pranab Mukherjee had instituted these awards at the Vice Chancellors' Conference in 2014 with the aim of encouraging central universities to adopt best practices and benchmarks from across the world and to promote healthy inter-university competition. These awards are named after the President who is the Visitor of central universities.
Mukherjee will present the Visitor's awards for 2016 at the ‘Festival of Innovations’ a felicitation event to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 14.
While the visitor's award for innovation will be given to Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar for development of a genetically engineered vaccine and a therapeutic antibody against anthrax, Tezpur University in Assam has won annual Visitor's award for 'best university'.
The visitor's award for research will be conferred upon the Molecular Parasitology Group of JNU for its path-breaking achievement in the area of molecular parasitology, especially anti-malaria, leishmaniasis and amoebiasis.
