The district guardian minister, Harshwardhan Patil, donated a school bus to a city-based NGO Avani during a small ceremony on Saturday last week.
Avani is known to work in the field of education for the children belonging to the weaker sections. "It is a 40-seater bus, which will be used for the transportation of students from the weaker sections. The parents of these children work as labourers," said Anuradha Bhosale, vice-chairman of Avani.
Bhosale said that the NGO had first approached the guardian minister regarding the bus requirement a few months ago. The fulfilment of this wish in such a small time period will benefit the students who stay far away from schools, she added.
"We will be maintaining the bus and pay the bus driver's allowance via donations from various generous donors from the city, state and the country. The bus will start its operation from Monday in two shifts and help in the transportation of 80 students," she added.
Patil said he hopes the bus will prove useful for the needy students and be helpful in their education.
