Leading a visually challenged life is not easy by any stretch of imagination. Even the smallest task that we take for granted and do effortlessly takes special planning and preemptive thoughts. Add to that the perpetual discomfort of being in total or semi-darkness. To people who are gifted with sight, no amount of empathy will make you understand the true plight of such people.

Besides getting their sight back, what can truly ease their lives is someone who can help them navigate the darkness with ease.  Open the doors of education, introduce them to invaluable Braille and help them take their place in this world at their own pace. It seems like a tall order, it probably is, but not for the every smiling and cheerful Gagan Deep Singh.

He is a special needs teacher from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan trained at the National Institute of the Visually Handicapped. Gagan Deep Singh is single handedly transforming lives of several visually impaired children. The best part about him is that he develops a programme for every child considering his/her unique needs. Gagan also understands the importance of shoring in the family support, hence he spends considerable time counselling the families. He also supports these kids with learning equipment like the Braillers.

Gagan’s role as a counsellor yielded wonderful results in the case of 12-year-old Jetha, whose father Sujan Ram thought he couldn’t send his blind son to school.

Before Gagans intervention, Jetha stayed at home all day while his brother attended. Jetha now goes to a local school, which he really enjoys. Gagan visits him every week to provide support. “There’s no reason why Jetha cannot progress in his education further once he leaves primary school,” he says. “I’ll be there to help him.”
