On Saturday, the Ujjain police arrested an education department officer while trying to sell over 30 bundles of books worth ₹ 90,000 which were otherwise meant for free distribution to government school children under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan.
Upon getting an anonymous tipoff, the Mahidpur police formed teams and alerted the check post police to detain a car bearing the number plate MP09-GE-1108.
"When the vehicle was stopped we found bundles of books stacked inside. The driver said they were taking the books to Ghosla area of Mahidpur to sell them to scrap dealer," said Mahidpur police station in charge Shyamchandra Sharma.
The driver and the assistant revealed to the police in the interrogation that the books were given to them by the block academic coordinator (BAC) Rajendra Harad and the peon Madan Solanki asking them to sell them off to a scrap dealer in Ghosla."The accused, Harad and Solanki, were booked under IPC Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent) and 120 B (whoever is a party to a criminal conspiracy to commit an offence punishable with death) and were detained for questioning," said Sharma. District Education Officer (DEO), Ujjain, Sanjay Goyal was travelling and claimed ignorance of the entire incident.
District project coordinator (DPC) Deepak Halwe claimed that the books they received from Bhopal had been sent to all blocks for the new academic session, which is expected to start by June 15.
