A recent report of the state government funded research project Gujarat State Level Learning Achievement Survey (G-SLAS) — that was carried out by Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) has thrown up some shocking figures for our national language. Among all the subjects taught in the state primary schools, Sanskrit tops the list as the easiest and Hindi as the toughest. Learning levels in mathematics and social science were found to be below the state average of 45.15%.

If considered class –wise then in class VII, highest hard items (52.78 %) were found in Hindi and the lowest in English (11.11 %) and class VIII, highest (40 %) hard points in mathematics and the lowest (8.33 %) in English.

If we look at the learning levels achieved in individual classes covering a total number of 1,22,309 (61,420 boys and 60,889 girls) and 1,22,184 (61,322 boys and 60,863 girls) considered, then the  highest level of learning was observed in class VI with 63.58 % was observed in Class IV while the lowest level of learning was in students in the first and second semester, respectively, in Class V, both in mathematics at (31.33 %).

Interestingly, Sanskrit carries the distinction of students reporting only a few hard items in the upper primary classes while social science and mathematics carried more per cent of hard items as compared to English that carried less hard items in Class VI and VIII as compared to Class VII. If hard points were evaluated in context of subjects, irrespective of classes, the highest 60.41 per cent were found in the subject of social science as compared to the lowest (4.76 per cent) in Sanskrit.

The hard points identified in languages were from the fields of grammar, vocabulary, expression and explanation of the language. In case of Mathematics, most of the hard points were from the field of problem solving, factorisation, geometrical construction and different mathematical operations. In case of social science, most of the hard points were related to the field of historical and geographical facts, understanding and applications of events.
