HRD minister Smriti Irani has soothed many a frayed nerves when she announced that NCERT textbooks are available online for free downloads at the ministry’s “e-paatshala” initiative. The announcement comes at a time when reports are increasingly circulating about students finding it difficult to procure NCERT textbooks.

In fact in another show of largesse, Shri Irani said that 8 state governments have been given copyrights to print books in quantities sufficient to fulfil their students requirements.

"We would also put out in public that NCERT has its own sales counter in Ajmer, Bhopal, Shillong, Bhubneswar, Mysuru, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Guwahati and New Delhi, from where schools can procure these books in bulk," she said.

The HRD minister also added that her ministry, together with the CBSE in July 2015 had issued a circular stating that forcing parents to buy too many textbooks is an unsound practice.
