It was during a surprise inspection of a government upgraded middle school in Baraikala of Kasmar block on Friday when DC Rai Mahimapat Ray was left in surprise when he saw a few students of classes IX and X sitting on the floor.

It came to him as a surprise that a majority of the 230-odd students of classes IX and X are forced to sit on sacks they carry from home, highlighting the sorry state of infrastructure development. Ray, further, asked the children about their problems.

The school is also staggering under a staff crunch, with two para-teachers shouldering the burden of taking classes.

Rai took stock of the issue and met with deputy superintendent of education (DSE) Bina Kumari and block education officer Puspa Kumari and inquired about the current seating crux.

Source said while the school was upgraded in 2014, infrastructure development funds have not been sanctioned by the state government yet. Ray took an action against the delay and stated "I have directed the DSE to sanction funds for the construction of two classrooms. Also, benches will be installed soon".

The poor conditions in Baraikala government school make us think the conditions of other such government schools, and the need for more deputy commissioners like Ray.
