We think we know ourselves enough and better than anyone else, but do we really? NLP clears the difference between your perception about yourself and the real you … but what exactly is NLP and why are we talking about it on ScooTalks?

Neuro-linguistic programming, NLP, is an approach to understand the working pattern of our mind so that we can decipher our subconscious thinking process and thus act accordingly. Studying our own behavior helps us use our mind to the fullest and hence NLP assists kids/students to perform better in every aspect of life.

NLP experts, Dr. Charu Chopra and Mr. Ranjit Khuller recently had conducted workshops in two schools. With the aim to help students have a better understanding of themselves and thus develop their confidence, they made use of three techniques to train students.

Drawing

The mentors asked the kids to express themselves through their drawings. What the students drew was used as a metaphor to know and understand their thoughts process. Students were left on their own to draw whatever they felt like. With their drawings, the mentors got a chance to peep inside the kids’ mind and hence were able to direct them in the right direction.

Next was the Mirror and Matching technique

People feel comfortable in the company of peers … same age-group people … same understanding … similar thinking, but what’s common in all of them is the word ‘same’. You are vulnerable to befriend and be comfortable in the company of those who have same taste as yours. So this technique helps you match your behavior with others and hence build a bond with them.

To teach this technique, the mentors divided the students in groups of two where they were asked to notice each other’s behavior, judge them and behave with them accordingly. Noticing others and behaving like them creates an air of ease around them and this is what makes the technique work.
