No homework for GEMS students on International Family Day 2017
To observe the United Nation’s International Family Day this year centred around the theme of “Families, education and well-being”, students at GEMS Schools will have no homework in order to spend more time with their parents and families.
To observe the United Nation’s International Family Day this year centred around the theme of “Families, education and well-being”, students at GEMS Schools will have no homework in order to spend more time with their parents and families.
Additionally, some GEMS employees will leave work early to spend quality time with their families. Through the GEMS rewards programme GEMS families will also receive a discount to the Dubai Opera.
Dino Varkey, Chief Executive Officer, GEMS Education, said: “Today marks the UN’s International Day of Families and at GEMS ‘family’ is very important to us. The International Day of Families provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families. The 2017 Theme: “Families, education and well-being”, is something we believe in.
“We are the third generation of educators, and we have had the privilege of being a trusted partner for thousands of families over the years. We are also proud to share that, like my own family, there are many examples of families where every family member is connected to GEMS. We also have examples where second and even third generations are now a part of GEMS To them we say thank you, and we wish every family a Happy Family Day,” added Dino.
Parents at GEMS International School, Al Khail shared their views about the initiatives for family day:
“We are happy to have the notion of family day reinforced by the school. It sends a good message.”
“We are happy that the school recognizes the high importance of family and appreciate the emphasis. “
Sharon George a teacher and parent at The Milllennium School, Dubai shared her view. “The no-homework day is a unique initiative. It gives respite to students and parents and allows for some extra fun time in the middle of a hectic week,” she said.
“I took the kids out for ice-cream during the extra time that would have otherwise been spent on homework. That is of course a double treat for the kids!” said Afsal I.S, another parent and teacher at The Millennium School, Dubai.
The International Day of Families is observed worldwide on 15 May – an occasion to celebrate the importance of families to people, societies and cultures around the world.
