A study conducted by the district administration under the Centre’s Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) states that in the last 2 years the number of student drop-out of school has increased by 20%.

A survey, ‘Out Of School,’ brought forth the fact that the number of children not attending school increased from 2,018 in 2014 to 2,431 in 2015.

Poverty as the prime factor behind the major number of dropouts and unwillingness to go to school as the other and both of them together also served as one of the reasons for it.

On one hand where the figures show increase in the number of school drop outs, on the other, the government claims that it had enrolled the students in the school and also gave them accommodation but according to Ranjeet Kumar, district coordinator of Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan, many of the parents migrated to the city for casual jobs and the students were living in industrial areas.

He said, “Mostly, their parents can't afford the school fees. However, some parents do not want their kids to go to school as they want them to earn.”

The other fact that came to light was that  most of the “out of school” kids were living in urban areas. According to Ranjeet Kumar the finding was a surprising one. “There is a general perception is that people living in rural areas do not bother for their children's studies. However, in this survey, we found the trend to be opposite,” he said. “The figures for such children fluctuate, as their parents frequently shift cities. For now, the kids have been enrolled in school,” Kumar added.
