This worldwide lockdown has affected children in more than one way. In the age of proper cognition development when they need more than just academic education, these children are locked at home. Schools turned to online learning just as immediately as the lockdown began, but a child’s development needs more than book-ish studies.
Many children are not having enough activity that would result in some sort of exercise, and sitting in front of screens is not helping the case either.
Here are some ways you could pursue your students to get up and do some exercise:
Outdoor games: It seems like ages ago when we used to see children playing on the street in the evening, now they would rather play on their PlayStation/gadgets. This is a good time to remind them that there are more than graphic games in the world, bring back those memories you have of outdoor games from your childhood. Explain a new game every day and challenge them to play it better than others. For example:
Jump Rope
Jumping rope is a fantastic way to exercise, and all needed is a simple jump rope. Not only does jumping rope amp up your heart rate and improve endurance, but it also develops balancing and coordination skills. The bonus: this activity can be done with just one person or multiple people.
Obstacle Courses
For this, involve their parents because they can set up obstacle courses in the yard, which is not a bad idea for some extra fun. Using any items as they like, or already have at home. Buckets, paint cans, chairs and stools and more can come together for a fun obstacle course your students will want to do over and over.
Frisbee & Catch
Nobody can go wrong with any activity that involves throwing and catching. A frisbee is a flat disc that is thrown in the air and caught, the same goes with ball-catch. If your students do not have siblings or can not find anybody to play along with, they can stand in front of a wall and bounce the ball against it and play counting how many catches they did without dropping. Or in case of a frisbee, they can place a target and try throwing/landing the frisbee on the target.
Indoor Games: The weather can be a problem at times, but no problem playing indoors can be very active as well. For example:
Movement Chain
Player 1 does two repetitions of the same movement. Let's say they do two jumping jacks. Then, player 2 repeats those repetitions and adds two of their own, such as tuck jumps. (multi-player game)
Crab-Walk Races
Ask your students to set up a course in their home and have them race each other to the end. They will find it extremely winding activity as well as, for whatever reason, it's fun to move in weird ways.
The Floor is Lava
This game, put simply, is unbeatable. It's one of those games that seems to entertain kids (and adults, TBH) for hours on end. It's simple, it's easy and it's active. Simply place the cushions, bags, shoes and other objects all over the floor and instruct the children to move around without touching any body part to the floor.
