IB as a Learning Framework

International Baccalaureate (IB) as a framework to providing an inquiry-based model of learning isn’t anything new globally. An IB school prepares a student for international education at a higher grade level. With high standard education introduced much earlier during their academic years, students have a smooth transition from their early and middle years to high school and later to higher education. They are made familiar with the leading education standards and academic levels of the best universities abroad, offering holistic programs with an introduction to foreign language training right from early academic years.

The Steady Rise in IB Schools in NCR

India has 176+ IB World Schools and the IB Diploma is taught at 139+ schools to provide a solid education foundation to students. Understanding the potential of each educational curriculum and aligning them to the 21st-century learning needs, developing countries like India, especially in tier 1 and tier 2 cities have openly embraced varied options, enabling a rich set for parents and students to choose from. Mahesh Balakrishnan, IBO Development and Recognition Manager- we see good interest in the IB programmes from schools and parent community in NCR. Talking specifically about NCR, there is easily a handful of five-plus IB and IGCSE schools. These schools were largely started within the last fifteen years and include Pathways, Genesis Global, Amity Global, Shiv Nadar, Step by Step and The Shriram Millenium, as established players and Prometheus School as a new IB candidate school for Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP).

Introducing Prometheus

The new bee in the mix, the Prometheus School, is an IB candidate school for PYP and MYP. With serial entrepreneur, Mukesh Sharma as the Founding Chairman and Director, the school has created a clear edge for itself in its first year of operations. The school has a sprawling campus in Jaypee Wish Town, Sector 131, Noida and reached several milestones including its PYP and MYP candidature by IB office. Flanked by its association with QA InfoTech, Mukesh’s flagship venture in software engineering services and educational technology, Prometheus has a strong positioning in the world of IB learning. Prometheus School is mentored by veterans such as Ms. Aneesha Sahni, Vice Principal, Primary and Ms. Rashima Varma, Principal, Secondary with rich experience in the educational and technology sectors looking to hone the critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills of its students early on.

When asked about the school’s mission, distinguishing proposition and path ahead, the responses we received were welcoming and well worth looking forward to. With a strong rooting in the belief system of inquiry-based learning, the school is on a mission to Reimagine Learning. This includes both reimagining the pedagogies for the core academic curriculum with more practical and hands-on strategies as well as going beyond the bounds of academics. The school also believes in learning through play, encouraging all styles of play for all ages. They have a unique setup called Prometheus town right on the premises encouraging a play-based exposure and respect for varied professions early on. The school strongly believes in identifying early traits of children and helping hone them, whether they be in core academic excellence or arts or sports, whatever the case may be. For example, the school is enabled to support, the sporting aspirations of its students, even at competitive scales. Mukesh himself is an avid golfer, with personal interest across a range of sports. With a focus on acknowledging and empowering students pursue diverse aspirations early on, Mukesh wants to see Prometheans represent India in the Olympics. He believes it is an achievable target to see India well positioning itself in global events like Olympics in the coming years. Parents are also open to these ideas beyond the realms of traditional education today, which is very promising. The same holds true for empowering budding entrepreneurs, start their own ventures early on, enabled by the inquiry-based learning of the IB program.

Mukesh believes that IB as an educational framework provides the required flexibility and agility to reach newer heights beyond horizons if schools can be creative in leveraging the scope it offers. This is a core that he has believed in even before Prometheus started operations and was in fact, the driving force behind the school’s ideation and setup. COVID-19 has been a live proof that with the right agility in operations, educational continuity can be very effective come what may. One may argue that all of these come at a premium cost. The school is firm that IB can be affordable too, with the right investments, a passionate team of teachers, a supportive set of parents – all invested in just one core – which is “Opening up the horizons for students and empowering them to succeed at global levels in a reimagined style of learning”.

The IB programme continues to attract highly ambitious students in the region. What is important is to consider the work of schools such as Prometheus that have given more hope for quality international education at an affordable price for the Delhi NCR families.

We wish both Prometheus and the several other IB players in the NCR area the very best, as we all globally march into the new style of blended learning, necessitated by COVID-19.
