Rather than a wave of nostalgia Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy was hit by a wall of dismay when he made a surprise visit to his alma mater, the Thanthai Periyar Government Higher Secondary School at Manavely. He was shocked by the lack of basic amenities at the school and directed the authorities to take remedial steps.

The CM was accompanied by Education Minister R Kamalakannan and local MLA R K R Anandaraman on this trip. While at the school, he inspected the kitchen, held discussions with the students and also duly noted the lack of compound wall around the school building, which encouraged anti-social elements to misuse the premises.

He also noted that the kitchen was using diesel operated ovens to prepare noon meal for students. “I have asked the school authorities to use cooking gas and improve the quality of food,” he said.

With the government giving priority to education and healthcare, there should be no excuse on part of the authorities to shy away from providing quality education and good environment, he said.
