In recognition of its efforts for developing football at the grassroot level, the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society (SMSES) has been conferred with National Sports Award Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar, for Sports for Development by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. The Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society organises the very popular Subroto Cup football Tournament, and over the last 60 years has contributed significantly towards the game in the country.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, on August 23, announced the award of Sports for Development to Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society in conjunction with other sports awards just like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dronacharya, Arjuna Award etc.
Ever since its foundation in 1960, the Subroto Cup football Tournament, named after the first Chief of Air Staff of Indian Air Force, Late Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee OBE, has repeatedly charted new waters to ascertain every child in the country is inspired to play football in India. With an overwhelming participation by 35,000 Indian and International teams, the Subroto Cup organised by the Indian Air Force, boasts of being the largest football tournament for school children. The tournament has created a serious impact on Indian football in recent times by creating heightened interest in football. Subroto Cup football tournament is recognised as a Game Changer and a Bedrock for nurturing talent at the junior and sub-junior level within the country.
Air Marshal MK Malik AVSM VSM Air Officer-in-charge Administration who also holds the office of the Vice Chairman of Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society received the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar on behalf of Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society from Honourable President of India at a ceremony in Rastrapati Bhawan.
