A 15-member team of Class XI students of K R Montford School in Perambur has designed an online search engine called 'Schoogle – Google For School' and an app called 'Poppeagle' to increase awareness on internet usage and online distractions.
'Schoogle – Google For School' is designed as an exclusive engine for the student community with information related only to education and filters out / removes the options for downloading commercial movies or adult content. The team also developed games designed on educational concepts, students can log in with their school ID and dabble in practical application of science and mathematical concepts.
Project coordinator Ambika Soundarapandian said the school has tried approaching Google to help them take the engine to the next level. "We have contacted them via email and are seeking an online session to present our designs to them. This kind of a search engine will prevent unnecessary arguments about the way kids spend time on the internet," she said.
Once the app 'Poppeagle' is installed on a phone or tablet, it keeps track of the internet usage once the user goes online, and gives out alerts in the form of a popping eagle. The design was conceptualised by students and the school helped by bringing in a technical team to bring the mobile app to life.
These projects were developed as part of the 'Design for Change' international competition conducted by a private school in Ahmedabad to encourage students to come out with concepts that can bring about social and community changes.
