Mabel was a widow deep in poverty with two hungry children. Washing other people’s laundry for 10 hours everyday, she barely earned enough to keep them fed. Yet she makes room in her home and heart for little Jimmy, an abandoned baby that was left on her doorstep.

Throughout his childhood, Jimmy wore old second hand clothes and played with broken toys because that is the best Mabel could do. But when their town got its first library, Jimmy was the first to get a library card and read all the books available.

As an adolescent Jimmy hitch hikes his way from Pennsylvania to Florida and back with only 35 cents in his pocket. When he joined the navy he rises to the rank of lieutenant commander and is posted to 49 different islands. All these adventures he recorded in his journal each night.

The book that emerged from the journal was published as 'Tales of the South Pacific’ that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948. Jimmy aka James Michener then went on to write more than 40 books that collectively sold more than a 100 million copies. He was granted more than 30 honorary doctorates in 5 fields, and received the presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. His cash donations to public libraries and universities exceeded 117 million dollars.
