Concerned with the 30 per cent dip in learning outcomes of science and mathematics in school, the Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday, June 28 stated "One of our biggest challenges has been… when you look at the learning outcomes of science and mathematics in our schools (classes 6 to 8)… learning outcomes have dipped to at least 30 per cent," at the fourth convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata at Mohanpur in Nadia, according to IANS.

Praising the efforts of IISER-Kolkata towards promoting scientific research activities among the school students, the minister said that quest for knowledge, discovery and innovations should continue at all levels.

Stating about the area of concern, the minister added "The worry is this… how do we get bright students into scientific institutions of calibre like IISERs, so that we see more scientific and research output in our country."

Recently, the HRD ministry gave its permission for holding common counselling for IISERs with Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), from the next academic year.
