The Government Middle School in Karumarapatti village near Thurinjapuram was the scene of intense action as more than 70 students along with their parents locked the school gate and protested, demanding immediate action against two teachers who came to school drunk.
The students alleged that the two teachers Pandiyan and Karunanidhi were irregular to school, chewed tobacco inside the school premises and even took the children’s lunch boxes and at their food.
The parents were adamant that unless the authorities transferred the said teachers from the school they will not send their children to school as those teachers were setting a wrong precedent on the impressionable minds.
Upon receiving information about the parent protest, assistant elementary education officer S Vincent Jayaraj and tahsildar of Kilpennathur spoke with the protesting parents.
The villagers and students were placated only after assurances by the officials that action will be initiated against the guilty teachers. "The issue will be taken to the notice of the higher authorities of the department," said Vincent Jayaraj.
Vincent revealed that the headmaster of the school had already lodged a complaint against Karunanidhi 3 weeks before the said incident.
"I have summoned the teacher (Karunanidhi) for inquiry, but he did not appear for the inquiry. We have sent a letter seeking an explanation for his absence for inquiry. For which he replied that he was not well," he added.
District elementary education officer R Rajendran assured that the two teachers would be transferred besides initiating a departmental inquiry.
