A traffic study carried out in the city of Baroda has revealed an interesting correlation between traffic sense and education levels. Contrary to common logic, the higher the education level lesser is the traffic sense observed in individuals.
Specifically, the study showed that respondents with education lesser than the primary levels had faced minimum number of accidents than those who had completed their SSC.
The study conducted under the supervision of traffic expert Satyen Kulabker, analysed several facets of fatal accidents. The study also said that there were more fatalities in case of motorcycle drivers compared to four-wheeler drivers. "Last year, 131 persons died in motorbike accidents compared to just 14 deaths in to car accidents. The deaths in motorbike accidents may be high due to driving on wrong side of the road and not wearing helmets," Kulabker said.
The accident rates were also a factor of the age of the vehicle. Less than a year old vehicles were involved in 12 fatal accidents while those between 2-to-4 years encountered 43 accidents.
Kulabker said that the study was undertaken to identify reasons for accidents and to encourage safer driving. The traffic department had recently conducted a meeting wherein areas witnessing most accidents were identified and suggestions were made to tackle the problem.
