To many the name Kabul gives jitters! And when you come to think of girls in Kabul, it gets all the more scary. The place doesn’t allow freedom and space to grow to boys, as per our believes. And we are always left wondering what might be the situation for girls there!

So here’s something to challenge these believes.

Britain’s popular photographer, Jessica Fulford-Dobson, gives a surprise! She clicked images of 5-8 years of school-going girls skateboarding. Yes, we just said girls, school-going and skateboarding in one single sentence. And breath too! The idea, as it amazes us, appealed Jessica who simply packed her bags and flew off to be with them.

So, Kabul is one country where free-will isn’t allowed, but these young girls are trying to breathe … fly out in their own peculiar way … skateboarding, thanks to a German NGO school.

The girls struck awe-inspiring poses, they skated around with confidence, which shows a way to women empowerment. And yet more, these girls come as some fresh and happy news from Afghanistan, a country generally in news for more of depressing news.

The enthusiastic photographer who considers clicking their picture as an opportunity said, “The article was so short that I nearly missed it. The very idea of Afghan girls on skateboards captured my imagination and I thought it was a shame that such a visually striking story was compressed into a small column of text. We only seem to hear bleak news from Afghanistan, so it was really refreshing to read something so different and uplifting. I knew immediately that the Skate Girls of Kabul would be the perfect subject for me as a photographer. I specialize in portraiture, particularly of children, and here was an opportunity to photograph young girls doing something exceptional in a beautiful, albeit war-torn, country.”

What is all the more surprising is the fact that around 40% of the learners at Skateistan are women, many of whom are street workers and even disabled.

Way to go girls!!
