A new hero has been found. A very young hero. And this newly found hero has already gone international.
Ishita Katyal.
Yep, she is the latest Indian hero. For a child of 10 years, she has received a lot of international fame.
When children her age stay busy with toys and cartoons, Ishita, a student of Vibgyor High in Balewadi, Pune has cracked it at TED Youth Conference. When children her age have difficulty answering the question “What do you want to be in future?”, Ishita decided it wasn’t just her future that she was concerned about, it was also her present. She found the question “What do you want to be now?” a better one to answer. And she did … at TED Youth Conference in New York … and thus became the youngest Indian to speak at the TED Youth Conference.

Her journey started almost 2 years back, when she first attended TEDx Pune in 2013. She got so influenced by the entire event that she wanted to be a part of it, so called up the organizers and proposed them for selecting her as a part of their team, following which she cleared two skype interviews with Global Volunteers at TEDx and finally became the youngest youth organizer in the Asia-Pacific region.
She then organized a TEDx at her school, Vibgyor High Balewadi and was later invited to speak at the TED Youth Conference in New York.
Ishita's mother, Nancy Katyal told the media,”She is very clear about what she wants. She didn’t hesitate for even a second. The whole trip was sponsored by TEDx. At the main event, when she stood on the stage to speak, I felt nervous because she was the youngest and had to speak without holding any paper in her hand. But she spoke well.”
“When I finished my speech, I was relieved because it was exactly how I imagined it to be. It was midnight in India, but my friends and relatives called me after the talk to convey their best wishes.”
That’s not all … this powerhouse of talent and an an avid reader is an author herself. She was merely 8, when her book “Simran’s Diary” was released.

Crediting her dad for all the success, she said, “Earlier it was very hard for me to manage everything – school, studies, TEDx, writing. Sometimes when I finished writing, I realized that I had forgotten to do my homework. Then my dad suggested me to wake up early in the morning. So at first I woke up at 6 a.m and then eventually I started waking up at 5 a.m. I would make a checklist of things I forgot, to make sure that I do them the following day in the morning.”
We hope to come back with Ishita’s TEDx Youth Conference talk video soon.
