When Emerson Elementary School’s (in Oakland) first-grade teacher Peter Limata decided to begin his virtual stories, he was sure for a lot of kids from his school to join. But, what he was surprised to see was kids and adults from different countries join in too.
"…we started getting siblings and friends and grown-ups too, and now it's people from Chicago, Baltimore, New York and even England and Scotland. It's crazy," he expressed. He added that it fascinates him how kids across cultures have been able to relate to his stories and their characters.
Limata’s Facebook classes easily have 30 to 50 children join in every day. He shared, "The idea for me came the Sunday after the closure (lockdown), like, 'What can I do to give the kids continuity to those awesome storytime moments we usually do in class?' And, since then, it has been growing every day."
Limata has read books like Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin, Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems, classics like Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal.
From expressions to adding his personal stories, he does it all to engage his listeners. Definitely, it’s not just the stories that he reads but also the way he reads them. Do you want to attend his lovely live sessions? Go to his Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/peter.limata
