COVID-19 pandemic has inspired many students of the science and technology-field to take on the challenge of providing appropriate technology to curb the spread. A similar inspiring story is from Delhi, where a startup named PerSapien Innovation has invented the machine called Airlens Minus Corona (-Corona).

The start-up is founded by IIT Stanford University alumnus Debayan Saha and Shashi Ranjan.

Shashi says, "the machine is like a “Robo Sapien” (a human-like machine) that operates on the mechanism of charged/ionised water droplets, which is ionised using the corona discharge. The machine disperses the ionised water droplets, which in turn oxidises the viral protein, and hence reducing it to a non-harmful molecule."

Debayan adds "alcohols (like ethanol or IPA) are known to inactivate viruses by denaturing their protein coat. But alcohol-based hand sanitisers are useful on a smaller scale. For example, it is useful for individuals to sanitise their hands, and is also helpful to sanitise surfaces at home, offices, etc."

The utility of the machine is of high value as it can spray ionised waters proplets in public places, thus prohibiting the need of sending humans to do the risky job of manual disinfecting.

The most wonderful thing about the initiative is that it is not a profit-making one, and the machine is not for commercial sale. The technology behind the machine will also be shared publically so that anyone can make it.

The duo is confident about the proper working of the machine as they have tested it rigorously and seen successful results. They are already in touch with the national government to contribute to the cause of averting a large scale spread of the virus.

“Considering the deadly situation India is exposed to, in order to curb the menace created by the virus, the government authorities will need such technology. Therefore, while the entire country has come together to fight the virus, we would like to contribute by giving Airlens Minus Corona technology to the government to check the spread of the virus,” Debayan says.

This is truly an inspiring story that should be shared with children interested in science and technology to tickle their innovative side.
