Today, India celebrates National Technology Day

The National Technology Day is an important day for Indian Technologists since 1998 and is celebrated every year on May 11.

This day is special to every Indian since India achieved a remarkable technological advancement on this day in 1998. Three nuclear tests were successfully conducted on May 11, 1998, in Pokhran, Rajasthan. This was done to demonstrate the defense and technological capabilities of India.

India became sixth country to have tested nuclear bombs and joined the elite nuclear club in 1998 as On 11 May 1998, 24 years after the first operation, the Atomic Energy Commission of India and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the joint operation, known as Pokhran-II in Pokhran city of Rajsthan.

In 1999, it was decided to annually commemorate this day as the National Technology Day.

An important day in the Indian science history, National Technology Day motivates students to make a career in Science and Technology.

This day is remembered for many indigenous technological achievements, which include:

  • Indigenous aircraft “Hansa-3” test flight in Bangalore.
  • Trishul missile was also successfully tested on the same day.
  • Last but not the least, three nuclear tests were done successfully on May 11, 1998, under the guidance of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam who later became the President of India.The DFLR (Defence Food Research Laboratory) will celebrate this day as the anniversary of Shakti,through an exhibition where many amazing products and recent technology will be showcased publicly from 10 am to 4 pm on May 11.

Also, Technology Development Board (TDB) has initiated a national award on this day which is given to various individuals and industries for their successful achievements in the commercialization of Indigenous Technology.
