Over weight school bags are ringing alarm bells in Hyderabad. With shocking reports emerging that the average child’s school bag weight is increasing every year, the Telangana State Council for Education and Research Training (TS SCERT) has decided to report the issue to the School Education Department.
The panel has asked schools and parents to ensure that the students do not carry overweight lunch boxes and water bottles, and adhere to the standard bag weight set by the Yashpal Education Committee in 1993.
As per the guidelines, the standard bag weight of students of class 1 and 2 should not exceed 2 kg, of class 3 and 4, not more than 3 kg and class 5 to 8 should be within 4 kg.
The SCERT experts have claimed that private schools are prescribing additional reference books, modules, workbooks and other supplementary books which are unnecessarily burdening the student baggage. The authority also states that the school directors and principals will be held responsible if the students are found carrying overweight bags.

“SCERT demands action to be taken against such schools and will very soon write to the School Education Department officials,” he said. He further said that they had asked schools to adopt only SCERT textbooks in case of State board and NCERT for Centre-board schools.
Weight of students’ school bags is likely to be examined after the beginning of the new academic year.
