The state of Rajasthan generally doesn’t have much to show in social indicators including education. However, the government is trying to address the issue. The state suffers from an abnormally high girl drop-out ratio. In the 2015-16, for every 100 boys, 84 girls enrolled in the state. This is much below the national average of 94 girls for 100 boys.
To motivate parents to send girls to school and keep them there, the state government has announced cash benefits for those studying in government schools.
The scheme, which will be rolled out under the leadership of the education department, will directly transfer money into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. These beneficiaries are categorized into four buckets.
Every girl who enrols in Class I will be entitled to receive ₹4,000 while those enrolling in Class VI will get ₹5,000. Those who pass-out classes X and XII will receive ₹11,000 and ₹25,000 directly in their bank accounts respectively.
Viewed holistically, the scheme not only motivates parents to enrol their girls in schools but also keep them there till the pass out grade XII. If a parent enrols his girl child in school and keeps here there till she passes class XII, he will received a total amount of ₹51,000.
The figures from the education department reveal that approximately 60,000 girls enrolled in Class I this year itself. The due amount will be deposited in the bank account of the beneficiary soon.
Education minister Vasudev Devnani was optimistic about the positive impact the scheme could bring about on bridging the gender gap.
"This is being done to encourage parents to educate their girl child," he said. Other ongoing schemes such as distribution of bicycles and scholarships would also continue along with the new one. This would increase enrolments in government schools, he added.
