In a classic case of ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ a block of the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Maloya’s building remains closed even 6 years after it was declared unsafe. In 2013, the Director Public Instructions (DPI) had already approved ₹4.57 crore for the construction of a new block but till date the building is non-functional and has been fenced off to prevent anyone from entering it.

The school lies in Maloya village, near Sector 39, at the boundary of Chandigarh and Mohali. Around 7 years ago, the building was declared unsafe as parts of the roof started falling in classrooms. Today, the school which is running in 2 shifts is facing severe space crunch which would otherwise not had been the case if the new building was constructed on time.

Besides the large ignored block, the school in itself is in a poor state of disrepair. The school has no science laboratory, which makes one wonder how practical knowledge is imparted to the students. The library has no librarian. The school doesn’t have a water connection prompting the authorities to call for water tankers every day. According to the principal the water school has to rely on tankers due to low pressure and increased consumption during summers and not due to lack of connection.

The approach road to school is in a shoddy condition which leads to water logging. Many a times students return home without attending school as they cannot reach the school due to the water logging.
