We Salute This Delhi Cop Who’s Sincerely Supervising Daily Education For Slum Kids
Meet Than Singh who’s earnestly working for the bright future of the slum kids.
Than Singh is a constable with the Delhi Police, posted at the Lal Qila police station. Every day, after his shift in the evening, he goes to Sai Baba Temple in Lal Qila parking space to resume his evening school for the underprivileged kids. He started this unique learning space in 2016 with just four children and today, he has more than fifty students who come to attend his classes from the nearby slums.
When the worldwide lockdown was commenced, Singh shut the school to abide by the rules but soon realised that these children do not have an alternative left, unlike the privileged ones who immediately got to online classrooms. That is when he reopened and has since been following every government-suggested protocol for gatherings. For example, he makes sure the students practice social distancing, use sanitizers and wear masks.
With his little salary, Singh buys necessary stationery supplies and book for his students. Apart from the traditional classes amongst his assortment of 5 to 15-year-old kids, he also teaches them moral values, good hygiene, etc.
He tells TOI, "I have grown up in slums and know the importance of education. I don't want these children to face the difficulties I had faced. I will try my best to improve the lives of these children. My seniors have also helped me in this initiative. They supported me financially so that I can continue the education of these children."
