You will get wet if you don’t open your umbrella in class in the ‘umbrella school’.

In the monsoon season the students have to use umbrellas to stay dry in the classroom or even when they have to use the toilet, earning the school the moniker “umbrella school.” The 50 year old building has seen enrolments dwindle from 400 to 15 currently.

Imagine a display of riotous colours of umbrellas right inside the classroom and that too when a lesson is in progress. No, this is not some new teaching technique but the condition of a Gautampura government school of Indore district. In the monsoon season the students have to use umbrellas to stay dry in the classroom or even when they have to use the toilet, earning the school the moniker "umbrella school."

This dismal condition can be blamed on the leaking roof of this 50 year old government boys’ middle school. The school is compelled to declare a holiday due to heavy downpours. Even after the rain has stopped, it takes 3-4 days for the roof leakage to stop as water accumulates on the roof

The School Principal, Bapu Singh Parmar expressed helplessness citing the letters that he and his predecessors had written to the administration. However, the good news is that the funds for repair work have been finally sanctioned and the work will begin after the rains.

The leaking roof is literally like a Damocles sword handing on the student’s heads, threatening to collapse without a warning. Today the student strength at school is about 15 students, a fraction of 400 students who were attending the schools till 4 years back. Sachin Chouhan and Goldi Rathi, both ex-students of the school lamented that the government is rapidly developing new education infrastructure while the existing schools are simply crumbling.
