Zilla parishad, night schools top priority, says Javadekar

Prakash Javdekar’s maiden Mumbai visit turned out to be a happy one for Namdar Gopal Krishna Gokhale School. The minister waived off the municipality fees for the school while there. He emphasised that improving quality of zilla parishad and night schools was a priority.

In what was Prakash Javdekar’s first visit to Mumbai after replacing Smriti Irani as the Union Minister for Human Resource Development in a cabinet reshuffle, the minister addressed students of a night school here on Saturday last week.

He interacted warmly with students of Namdar Gopal Krishna Gokhale night school in Dadar (West) which caters to underprivileged children. He laid out improving the quality of zilla parishad schools and night schools as his first priority in front of the audience. Also present were, Kapil Patil, Member of Legislative Council and president of Lok Bharati, and school authorities were present.

The school authorities updated Javadekar with the proud statistic that the school has been showing 100% result for the last 4 years. Saluting the students for their spirit of learning in night schools, Javadekar said, “After meeting you, my will to work for you has strengthened. PM Narendra Modi says work for the Dailts, underprivileged and backward classes. We will study the problems of night schools and will do whatever is possible for them.”

“I have also studied in a Zilla Parishad school. So, our top priority will be to improve quality of zilla parishad schools and night schools,” he added.

Seizing an opportune moment the school authorities also raised the issue of fees levied by the civic body for running the school, to which the minister offer immediate respite by directing the civic authorities not to increase fees. “Rather, you should help them in running such schools. Though there are more than 100 reading halls, the civic body should increase the number as much as possible,” he said adding that organisations that run night schools should be encouraged.
