Last week on Friday, a government school teacher was suspended in Erode district for allegedly deceiving hundreds of unemployed youth by offering them jobs as teachers in government schools in return for money. The total fraud amounted to more than ₹ 2 Crores.
The suspended teacher was identified as S Varanambikai, 45, of Thindal in Erode district. She was a secondary grade teacher with a government school in the same locality.
"She promised the youths that she will influence government officials from the education department and get teacher posts to them," said Ayyannan, chief educational officer (CEO), Erode district.
The fraud came to light after hundreds of youths, especially those who did not get jobs, lodged a police complaint in the Erode taluk station in February this year.
The Erode taluk police then shot off a missive to the chief education officer, seeking his consent to initiate probe against Varanambikai. Subsequently, the official gave his nod to police for further proceedings in the case.
As part of the investigation, the police arrested K Vinoth Kumar, 38, of Palayakottai in Harur taluk in Dharmapuri district. "Vinothkumar was an accomplice of Varanambikai and a partner in the crime," police said. Vinothkumar has since confessed in a statement given to the police that together they had swindled several crores of money from hundreds of youths.
Realising that police was hot on her trail, Varanambikai has been on the run ever since. Police have launched a massive manhunt for her. Meanwhile on Friday, the chief educational officer issued the suspension order to the teacher.
