The Goa government in partnership with Vedanta has rolled out an initiative under which 13 government high schools will get smart class and science labs on a pilot basis.

The project will equip classrooms from grade V to X with LCD projectors and computer systems with pre-loaded content to help teach individual subjects.  At the launch of the project Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar urged that the project should soon be extended to all 77 high schools of the state.

CM Parsekar explained that these 13 schools were selected for this project to enable less privileged students to get education, in a smart and technology-friendly way.

At the heart of the innovative learning system is a portable 5 kg device called K-Yan. It can convert any wall into an interactive surface. The pre-loaded content has already been vetted by the state council of educational research and training (SCERT) and will feature multimedia teaching involving virtual experiments, curriculum-based educational videos and training modules for teachers as well.

Deputy Director of education and director, SCERT, Nagaraj Honnekeri shared that the system comes with an annual maintenance period of 3 years, which means the private partner will undertake the maintenance of the systems in all the schools for the stipulated period.

The private partner will monitor the systems periodically and the company technicians would assist the teachers in running the systems. We have also launched easy to use science labs in 30 schools. These labs are kits designed by consulting the school curriculum and enables the teachers to demonstrate scientific concepts by way of 54 experiments in the classrooms itself, he added.
