School education in Kandhamal to improve with 3 new tribal schools.

The tribal dominated Kandhamal district will soon see more SC / ST students attend school as 3 new model residential schools are going to be set up. Upon completion, these schools will serve another 1,000 tribal students between Class VI to XII free of cost with hostel facilities.

The tribal dominated Kandhamal district will soon see more SC / ST students attend school as 3 new model residential schools are going to be set up.

Out of the 3 proposed schools, Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) will be set up in Phiringia while Raikia and Khajuripada will get a Kalinga model residential school each. Currently, 1 EMRS is functional at Mahasingi under Nuagaon block in the district at full capacity of 1,000 students.

According to sources, the government had approved the construction of these schools last year itself.

"The construction of the school buildings in all the residential schools was going on and they are expected to be completed before the start of the next academic year," said Ganeswar Bharimal, district welfare officer (DWO). Upon completion, these schools will serve another 1,000 tribal students between Class VI to XII free of cost with hostel facilities. The progress of the construction of the school building is being personally reviewed by the district collector Reghu G.

Besides adding to the rural school education infrastructure by the 3 proposed schools, the district administration is also planning to enrol approximately 328 SC and ST students in 4 English medium schools in Tikabali, G Udayagiri and Phulbani under the state government's Anwesha scheme.

The Anwesha scheme aims to enable SC and ST students from interior areas enrol in public schools in urban areas. This scheme will mobilise and assist close to 5,000 children to pursue quality education in leading English medium schools in the state every year. It will be completely free for the students with the government bearing bear all expenses.

"Last year we had enrolled only 41 students to an English medium school in Phulbani. This year their number has been increased to 328 after more parents have shown interest to enrol their students in English medium schools," said Bharimal.

Overall, he shared that around 25,000 SC and ST students were studying in approximately 200 residential schools run by the SC/ST development department in the district.
