The Jharkhand School Education and Literacy department has promised better facilities to children with special needs studying in government school in Jharkhand. The Centre has allocated ₹463 lakh to the department under the Inclusive Education of the Disabled at Secondary Stage (IEDSS) scheme of the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).
The total amount allocated, is to be used in2 tranches, the first ₹258 lakh will be used for FY2016-17, while the remaining amount will be utilized in the next financial year.
The IEDSS proposes to build toilets, organise orientation camps, recruit special teachers on contract, provide escort allowance along with medical and transport facilities. Also, a repository of Braille books for visually-impaired students will be created.
Swapnil Kujur, state programme officer of RMSA, said, "The scheme will benefit about 2,315 differently-abled children studying at the secondary level in government schools across the state."
As part of the initiative, a first-of-its-kind camp for differently-abled students with low vision was held yesterday.
Kujur said, "The camp, which is being organized on a pilot basis, will be held in Ranchi and Khunti in the first phase on Wednesday. We will be organising a medical assessment camp in association with NGO Site Saver International for children with low vision."
The department has already identified 52 students with low vision in Ranchi and 114 students in Khunti who will be first given a free eye check-up and then provided spectacles, minor eye surgery (if required by the children) and other necessary help is also on the cards. Depending on the response this camp generates, similar events will be organised across all districts soon.
